This film is available on the video "Some Shit by David J. Markey" which is a collection of short films and experimental works from the We Got Power House vaults. Director Markey playfully pieces together truly hilarious, and downright weird filmic interludes. Includes the famous Redd Kross short opus "Macaroni & Me" once used as a concert opener, and Sonic Youth's Kim Gordon in the surreal dreamstate "Astro Turf". Also included is "Stoner Park", "Puppetears", and an early one, "Plasticland".

Directed by Dave Markey David Markey's 1981 home-spun documentation of the Los Angeles early 80's hardcore punk scene. Interviews, live performances, and humorous interludes with Circle One, Wasted Youth, Red Cross, TSOL, The Cheifs, Sin34, Fear, Circle Jerks, and Black Flag with one of the very first live performances with Henry Rollins. Erratic, classic, one of a kind, single camera coverage of an era only touched upon by The Decline Of Western Civilization. The Slog Movie has a much more intimate fan/backstage/on stage feel. Glimpses of scenesters such as Pat Smear hanging around at Oki-Dogs, gigs at the Whisky A Go-Go, Cookoo's Nest, and more. See the Los Angeles scene explode, and in retrospect, connect the dots from 1981 to 1991, The Year Punk Broke. |

Directed by Lucas Reiner US (1991): Comedy
82 min, Rated PG-13, Color, Available on videocassette and laserdisc. Cast Includes:
Three time-travelers from 2176 trying to find the true basis of America think they've arrived in 1776, but it's really 1976. Limp spoof of the 70s simply catalogues the fads, styles, and fashions. Director and co-writer Reiner is Carl's son, Rob's brother. Sofia Coppola did the costumes. [In this movie, Steve McDonald plays Tommy Sears and Jeff plays his friend Chris Johnson, who are aged 17 and 18 respectively. Basically, they are the first people in 1976 to meet up with the travellers from 2176 (Cassidy, d'Abo & Hoyle). They spend most of the film trying to help the travellers get back to their own time. A pretty funny movie (if you're into this kind of thing, I suppose) but well worth watching for die-hard McDonald brothers fans. They are in practically the whole movie!!!! Watch until the end of the credits for, IMHO, one of the funniest bits of the film.] |

Directed by Allison Anders US (1992): Drama
101 min, Rated R, Color, Available on videocassette and laserdisc. Cast Includes:
Truck-stop waitress struggles to raise two daughters in a Laramie, N.M., trailer park, with the older one already jaded by men and the younger idealistic to the end. Overrated by some, but still fairly passionate despite a slender budget and minimalist cinematics. Good performances extend to Brolin's, as a wandering dad. Skye (Trudi) and Leitch (Darius) are real-life sister and brother. [If you want about 2 minutes worth of Jeff McDonald then check this out. He plays a long haired DJ from L.A. who doesn't get to say much but tries to make some moves on a couple of girls at a party he is DJing at (he looks kind of drunk and/ or stoned (he's supposed to, I think)). Even though Jeff's role is small it's still a great movie. It is worth checking out for his pants alone. Also, Fairuza Balk is brilliant and J. Mascis (from Dinosaur Jr.) pops up near the end of the film as an odd character called Cecil (Mascis also wrote and performed the soundtrack for the film).] |
Directed by Allison Anders US (1996): Drama
115 min, Rated R, Color, Available on videocassette and laserdisc. Cast Includes:
Disappointing film about a great subject; the pop music world centered around N.Y.C.'s Brill Building in the 1950s and 60s. Aspiring singer-songwriter Douglas finds doors closed to her as a performer but becomes a successful pop tunesmith instead; her destiny is then linked to a succession of men in the music business. Nice moments here and there but superficial at every turn - a real shame. Full of pleasant sound-alike songs from the period, plus one showstopper, "God Give Me Strength," written by Elvis Costello and pop veteran Burt Bacharach. Executive produced by Martin Scorcese. [Jeff, Steve and Brian play members of a band (kind of like The Beach Boys) that Matt's character produces. Their main scene was mostly ad-libbed and it's kind of amusing and defintely worth checking out. Besides, it's a pretty good movie (no matter what Len says) with a lot of other great actors in it and it's also directed by the very groovy Allison Anders.] "Grace Of My Heart" trailer [mov] [avi] [5.5M] NOTE: No Redd Kross members appear in this trailer but I thought I would provide a link to it anyway. |
