If anyone knows where an audio tape of the 1989 show from Charlotte can be obtained, please email me!!! They opened with Sounds of Silence (complete with fuzz bass! tx steve!), did theme from Jeffersons tv show, Sgt. Peppers reprise into A Day In The Life (yes, the whole song!), It Wont Be Long (very beat & close to the original-not like the recorded vers.), A Hard Days Night, Under My Thumb, and were playing soon to be classics like Bubblegum Factory and Shonen Knife for the warm up prior to their recording of them!!! Yes, I want a copy on audio of this show. It's never leaving me and I would dearly love it if someone could come up with one. Trades arranged. Thanks Redd Kross for making me a believer. (Oh yeah, they did I'm a Believer) Rock On!!! And, if Jeff & Steve read this, the cover vers. of Crazy Horses rocks!!! Still have the single I bought as a child!! What is Kolob??!! Anyone with the single knows what I'm talking about. Pretty fucking weird, huh! |

Name: LAH Website: Referred by: Word of Mouth From: Tx originally, Az now Time: 1997-12-04 10:50:00 Comments: I've been a Kross fan for over 10 yrs. My first exposure to them was when a friend (whose then boyfriend was pals w/ the McDonalds!) gave me "Neurotica" for my b-day. I liked it ok, but then they took me to see Kross live (the "Neurotica" tour -- '87?) and I fell instantly, totally and forever in love with Jeff & Steve & all incarnations of Redd Kross. They are THE BEST live band I've ever seen (and that Neurotica concert was the best of the best -- I miss Robert Hecker!) and continue to put out better albums than almost any other band around. So why has almost no one ever heard of them? Even after Stone Temple Pilots rip off their sound, they still get no recognition. Maybe it's just as well -- this way all us true fans get 'em to ourselves. I last saw 'em play when they opened for the Presidents, and am CRAVING another set -- an opening slot is far too short for the greatness of Redd Kross! Any news on future touring dates? I miss them! Redd Kross are true GODS OF ROCK. |

First heard RK on Rodneys show back in like '81 when I was 12. I've seen them play maybe 25 times, latest being at the Roxy last month...they're still fantastic. I'm having a hard time finding recent videos they put out, like "Jimmy's Fantasy" and others I don't even know about. I heard that they've appeared on Alternative Nation, but I never saw them cuz I don't watch MTV much. Anyplace I can buy copies???? |

From: Time: 1997-08-06 16:14:00 Comments: This is what the SF Weekly printed today regarding the Jeff thang: Confidential to Certain Incensensed and Outspoken Fans of Redd Kross and Jeff McDonald You know folks, there's this thing you might want to look into, commonly known as a "joke." Webster's New World College Dictionary defines a "joke", in part, as "a thing done or said merely in fun."(The fourth definition of "joke" may also be of personal interest to you.) And you shouldn't be curious about "joking" just because Riff Raff likes "jokes,", but because your hero, Jeff McDonalad, apparently does too. His outburst at the July 14th Redd Kross show at Slim's - something along the lines of "This next song is dedicated to the asshole in the SF Weekly who says I sound like Vince Neil!" - doubtfulss a "joke". In admiration of the wag that McDonald revealed himself to be, we counteredd with another "joke" Sure, we could announce our "jokes" with one of those colon and parenthesis smiley-face constructs oftern seen in e-mail [: )], but then that ruins the whole point of irony. Irony per Webster's ("A method of humorous or subtly sarcastic expression in which the intended meaning of the words is the direct opposite of their usual sense.") Phrases like "you *wish* you sounded like Vince Neil" are probably intended to ironically, unless offered in a Motley Crue fanzine. To reiterate: We were "joking" Unless, of course, Jeff McDonald is a moron, in which case he might not have been "joking", but, instead "Serious" And that would be too terrible to contemplate, wouldn't it? =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Well, I think that clears the air a little - and got Redd Kross some more free press! ~ Jonathan |

From: SF Time: 1997-07-30 04:03:00 Comments: This is what the SF Weekly recently wrote: The LAME ASS SF Weekly printed this crap last week: Printed the following: Confidential to Jeff McDonald, Singer and Guitarist for Redd Kross. Well, no, dear heart, actually it wasn't any asshole over here who said you sounded like Vince Neil. (We're referring to an outburst from McDonald at a recent Slim's show.) One of the critics here once compared the recent round of Redd Kross haircuts to those of Metallica. Vince Neil's *not* in Metallica, and hairstyles are different (though by no means less important) aspect of rock than voices. Maybe you were thinking of some other SF Weekly. Interesting that you brought it up, though.A friend of ours confides that you and your brother Steven took voice lessons from the same person who polished Vince Neil's vocal apparatus. And considering that the latest Motely Crue album just debuted at No. 4, you *wish* you sounded like Vince Neil. I saw we flood their e-mail with letters! mailbox@sfweekly.com |

Name: Karen Website: Referred by: Just Surfed On In! From: noho, kali Time: 1997-07-20 04:35:00 Comments: In the middle of the song, Jeff's guitar got out of tune so he stopped the show and changed guitars declaring an out-of-tune guitar for LA was unacceptable :) Then they did Annie's Gone and Jimmy's Fantasy. They played Mess Around, which was inspired by The Byrds (who Jeff listened to while stuck in traffic on the way to the show). Then they started doing Shonen Knife, but went into Crazy World, which was cool, but caused people to push towards the front, smooshing me against the stage (ouch!). but it was fun nonetheless :). They did Girl God, which was amazing, just entirely beautiful. Then Steve took over and did Frosted Flake :D Follow the Leader was next, this time with Eddie on lead guitar, instead of Jeff. They did It's In the Sky, which was so neat. They ended with Lady In the Front Row :) Then they went off stage. Everyone screamed blah blah..and then they came on again. :) and Robert Hecker was there!!! It was like a Neurotica reunion! Jeff had the biggest grin on his face the whole time. The encore started with "Love Is You", with Robert on guitar ("So Robert, why do you wear yr guitar so high?") and vocals of course. It was awesome. And the second encore was cool! It took Steve awhile to come out. Jeff got all dramatic and got rid of his guitar and grabbed his mic and they went straight into...A Hard Day's Night!!!!!! it was SO boss! then they did Annette's Got the Hits (no Clorox Girls though). They ended with Fancy, which Jeff began sitting on this equipment case thing and then ended up standing on (which made him like another 6 feet taller), all the while singing. It was amazing. Another groovy chapter to the Redd Kross Experience :) It was so neat for me because this was the first time i'd been at the very front! :) i came home with one of jeff's guitar picks, Steve's set list, and a big fat (phat) bruise on my knee from being pushed into the stage! :) 'twas entirely worth it! And they had size small t-shirts!!!!!!! Does it get any better??!??!?!?!?! :) I LOVE YOU REDD KROSS! |

The band came out and everyone went nuts :) Back home again, Redd Kross were on home turf. Jeff had on these neat velvety plaid pants and Steve had a neat Fleetwood Mac shirt. They started with Pretty Please Me. Jeff had a sort of "nervous breakdown" which was CRAZY, :) like Steve started telling him to take deep breaths. haha. They did Switchblade Sister (my personal fave) and then Stoned (they said it couldn't be played on the radio due to questionable lyrics! :P The band also emphasized it was a pro-straight edge song, while some people in the audience muttered "sure" . haha). Then they did Peach Kelli Pop, which was really cool because the venue, The Roxy in hollywood, is right next to the asshole haven, The Rainbow. In the middle of the song Jeff's guitar went out of tune and he stopped the sho |

The Slim's show in SF was the godhead show of the three Bay Area gigs; San Jose was good, Sacto was good but SF KICKED MAJOR BOOTY! The vibe was really cool, it was a packed house and the energy the band put out was AMAZING! Also the sound was the best there as well. Please let us know if you found this site from one of the fliers handed out, it was an experiment to try to help promote this site. Many thanks to the band and to Sparky for making that a great weekend, and for treating us so wonderfully! Oh yeah, Jeff ~ right on with the comment to the SF weAkly cd reviewer! You guys put on one of the best shows I've seen and that guy probably is into that lame "FireStarter" techno tune anyway! More thanks to Jeff and Steve for the wonderful interview session! ~ peace out, Jonathan "Jomo" |

It was an intimate affair played out in front of about 75 people with the encore consisting of mostly requests. One request to make about the page would be to put the "sounds" in MP3 or AU format so that some of us with slower machines might get around the problems of Real Audio. Other than that, the page is in perfect hands as far as this hombre is concerned. |
